If you’ve been following along on my stories, you’ve probably seen I’ve posted a few times about playing (and finally winning!) the video game Fall Guys!
If you don’t know, Fall Guys is a game where you play live with other people from around the world. The competition starts off with 60 players (cute little beans that you can customize with silly and adorable costumes) and each round a certain number of players is eliminated until there is one left standing in the final round. There’s usually about 4-6 rounds total and each level comes up at random and can be either a race, a survival, team game, logic type, or one where you need to get enough points. The thing is there’s usually lots of obstacles and it’s sooo easy to fall and get knocked around (Hence the name Fall Guys LOL).
It first came out in August of 2020 and me and Justin played it non-stop. It was my escape during a rough time in the pandemic where I was still in my corporate job I despised and everyday I’d just look forward to the weekend where I could play Fall Guys with Justin. At the time it was only for PC and Playstation I believe (maybe X-Box, I’m not sure) so I’d have to play it at Justin’s because he had the Playstation, I have a Switch.
Time passed and we stopped playing for a bit, but this summer it was released onto Nintendo Switch! So I got back into it as now I could play it on my own (I do still enjoy playing it with Justin!) and practice as much as I wanted.
Since replaying it basically everyday for the past month, I realized there’s actually a lot of life lessons within this game!
So in true fashion, as I do with Harry Potter, Star Wars, Disney and more … here’s some Life Lessons from my current favorite thing: Fall Guys!
It doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down so long as you get back up you can still finish the race:
I unlocked an achievement once for “falling down 10 times during a race but still qualifying” and I think that’s really beautiful. The point is it’s sooo true in life. Yeah, we fall. We get knocked off course, sometimes we get knocked just a bit and sometimes we get sent flying. But we always have the ability to get back up.
The only way you’ll ever finish the race is if you keep going; don’t give up! There’s always a chance you can still finish; always a chance you can win!
I can’t tell you how many times it looked like I wasn’t going to make it but wound up being the last bean to qualify. It’s alwayssss possible - just keep going!
Keep trying, never give up, you’ll get the crown eventually:
On the same vibe as that, yes sometimes we get eliminated, we fall in the slime, we don’t make the race in time, we guess the wrong fruit! But it doesn’t mean it’s over for good. You can always try again. You can restart a new show. There’s no limit to how many shows you can play. I played this thing for sooooo long and then one day, recently, I finally won the whole thing!
I probably played over 200 shows total, maybe even more, and I never gave up. I always knew one day I would win it all … and I did!
The same is true for life… you have unlimited chances and can always keep trying. So long as you do, eventually you’re destined to get a win!
Your expectations makes a difference:
In the run that wound up being the one I finally won the crown, in the second to last round I got the Swivler, which is a level I have consecutively gotten eliminated from. It’s crazy, you’re on a small circular runaway and there’s spinning things and a giant fan that can all knock and blow you off into the slime. But going into it, I just felt a surge of confidence and was like No, I can do this this time! And guess what… I did! I survived!
Going into the final round it was 9 person Fall Mountain (where you have to run past obstacles and be the first to get the crown). I had never come close to winning Fall Mountain, this one seemed a bit challenging, but I thought hey you never know. I have a 1/9 chance of winning - it’s possible! And if I don’t win, whoever does win, I hope it makes their day!
I went into it with a positive but neutral expectation, knowing that no matter what happened, I’d still be okay!
I went through the level and didn’t get hit by anything … there was still one blue bean ahead of me though as we were approaching the crown. As we got up there, I had this sensation that I was going to win. He jumped for the crown, but missed and fell down leaving me to run in and jump and get it! (There were some other beans on the other side too, but I knew it was mine!) I screamed and rejoiced, I finally won! And I know it’s because of my mindset.
Your mindset and your expectations are soooo powerful. It’s like that Henry Ford quote: “Whether you think you can or you can’t - you’re right!”
I’ve noticed so many times when playing when I go in with anxiety or feeling like I can’t do it - I fail. But when I have courage and believe in myself, I do way better!
Never doubt the power of your expectations, they really can create such magic for you.
People may push you into the slime but you can’t give up:
If you’ve played this game, you know one of the anxieties is the grab feature, where any bean can grab you and shove you. I’ve seen it happen to others, but the other day it happened to me on a Snowball survival level. This other bean ran up to me grabbed onto me and purposefully shoved me into the slime, eliminating me.
It made me SO SAD. But I realized, it is indeed a metaphor for life.
People are going to be mean and jerks and just shove you into the slime for no reason at all, but it’s no reason to stay down.
I exited out of that show and just started anew.
Other people bringing you down is no excuse to give up. It hurts and of course you want to process your very valid feelings, but when you’re ready, regain your strength and determination and remember your power. Remember, no one can ever truly dim your light and keep you down. Keep going, keep going after your dreams, you can do anything!
Which segues into…
Kindness Matters:
One of my favorite features on Fall Guys is the ability to use emotes. Yeah there’s some taunting ones in there, but I personally love using the simple cute wave!
One time, I was playing the Volleyfall level, which is essentially just Volleyball, and I’ll admit I was losing pretty badly. There was only 19 seconds left and there was no way I could win … so I just started waving to the bean on the other side of the net.
And to my sheer delight and happiness, he started waving back! We spent the next 19 seconds not playing, just waving at each other back and forth! It was so pure and so cute and 100% made my day! I told everyone that story and I also low-key asked the Universe to send extra blessings to whoever that person was!
Another fun wave story - I was playing the squad version, where you can either enter with other players you know or get matched up with other random ppl to become one squad. So I was matched up with other randoms and you know they’re you’re squad because they have smiley faces above their heads.
In the second round, we were on that rhino level where you stand around and try to avoid getting knocked into the slime by the rhinos. So for the most part, you’re standing around. I noticed one member of my team, dressed as metal dinosaur, was standing right next to me…so I waved to them! And then they waved back!
The level ended and our squad made it to the next level. We started off in Jump Club, where you are standing around and have to jump over the spinning beam that comes around. I started off right next to my dinosaur teammate and the second the game started me and the dinosaur waved to each other again at the same time! Then we kept doing it, and then a third bean, not on our team, came up and started waving and the three of us were waving!
It also made my day … which shows sometimes you can have cute, kind moments with strangers. There’s goodness in the world!
& finally Working in a duo or squad can help get you to where you wanna go:
In the show selector feature, there’s an option to play as a squad of four or a duo. I’ve played both - one time as the squad of four with my friends and several times as just a duo with Justin.
The beautiful thing about the squad or duo stage is that you can not make the race, you can get eliminated, but if the rest of your team does great, your points may be high enough to get you to the next level.
You work together as a team, you all hep each other out. You win or lose together and I think that’s a great message for life too.
Sometimes, we don’ have to do it all on our own. If we find a fun, good vibe squad - together we can lift each other up and achieve victory together!
At the time of writing this, Justin and I have won the overall duo show twice, and it shows that we’re better as a team; together we achieved more than we would have alone!
Find your squad and know they can absolutely help you win :)
Hehe I hope you enjoy this obviously very silly blog post! But it’s all true - we can find amazing life lessons embedded in even the silliest little video games, like my beloved Fall Guys <3
